Romanets N. The state of prisoners
during the 1932–1933 Holodomor
(based on materials from the Dnipropetrovsk region)
The article’s goal is to draw attention to the conditions of inmates in the
Dnipropetrovsk area during the 1932–1933 Holodomor.
The research methodology is grounded in the principles of comprehend-
siveness, the scientific method, and historicism. The present study
applied comparative-historical, historical-genetic, and comparative-
historical techniques to accomplish its objective. The methodologies of
source and hermeneutic analysis are used in the processing of archival
records.
Conclusions. A significant rise in the number of prisoners resulted from
widespread repressions during the 1932–1933 grain procurement cam-
paign. The majority of these detainees were peasants who were either
the subject of an inquiry or had been found guilty of offences including
theft of grain, products, animals, and failure to comply with procurement
plans. People who had been arrested were housed in appalling conditions
since their cells were 500–1000% overcrowded. The extreme over-
crowding made it hard to maintain even the barest hygienic and sanitary
standards, such as having enough dishes and drinking water. The
convicts started to contract infectious diseases, such as typhus, which
threatened the region’s whole population. A significant death rate
resulted from the prisoners’ inadequate nutrition once they were fatigued
from hunger. In congested quarters, the arrested went on the rampage.
The overpopulation of sites of deprivation of liberty rendered it hard to combat
crime in the Dnipropetrovsk region’s cities and villages since there was
nowhere to house the people who had been arrested for armed robbery
and banditry.
The authorities’ response to the dire circumstances surrounding the arrests
was to empty the places of confinement. This move was made for more
pragmatic reasons than the humane treatment of the prisoners, as they
were no longer able to work and the lack of workers in the state and
collective farm sectors. Prisoners’ conditions worsened throughout 1933
despite the actions taken by the Party-Soviet leadership.
Key words: Holodomor, prisoners, nutrition in prison cells, Dnipropetrovsk
region.
