Diocesan Gazettes

Official printed organs of the dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Russian Empire, published in Russian. In Ukraine the diocesan gazettes appeared from 1860 to 1918, two to four issues a month. Each issue had an official part (decrees and orders of the government, the Holy Synod and the diocesan authorities) and an unofficial part (sermons and religious texts; articles on general and local history, archaeology and ethnography; biographical sketches and obituaries; reviews and news). Many publications contain historical and statistical descriptions of dioceses, towns, villages, churches, monasteries and parishes. The activity of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine was an instrument of Russian imperial policy and carries a colonial legacy. At the same time the gazettes remain an invaluable source for the history, local studies and genealogy of Ukraine: they contain parish, statistical, biographical and toponymic information about parishes, settlements and families.
