The case of “Kharkiv petlurivska organisation”: a mysterious history of the starshynas of Bohdana Hmelnytskoho regiment

The article aims to expose the bodies of the GPU of the Ukrainian SSR's recruitment mechanisms for active participants in the armed struggle against the Soviet authorities in order to further use them in provocations against former UPR Army soldiers and the identification of Ukrainian resistance. The paper also looks at the subsequent lives of those who lived in the USSR in the 1920s, were involved in GPU investigation cases, and eventually found themselves forced to emigrate to the USA for unknown reasons. The methodology is founded on the ideas of historicism, scientificity, and thorough examination of archival sources. Chronological, comparative, search, and genealogical methods were used to solve the research challenge.Conclusions. All former active participants in the military struggle for the independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic who were compelled to stay in the USSR were closely watched by the Cheka-GPU bodies. The GPU extensively recruited former UPR Army veterans as agents to disclose their genuine feelings, attitudes, and any anti-Soviet schemes and intentions. The GPU organized provocations by setting up "accidental" meetings between agents and conceivable members of the Ukrainian armed insurgency. This encouraged candid discussions between the two groups and sparked the formation of fictitious anti-Soviet organizations. In the fall of 1921, the so-called "Kharkiv petlyurivska organization" was one such operation. It was started by GPU agents and UPR Army veterans Petrovskyi and Trofymenko (Vasilyev). The operation targeted the former officers of the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi-named 1-st Ukrainian Cossack Regiment and other UPR Army soldiers who resided in the oblasts of Kharkiv and Poltava and refused to accept the Soviet government's victory. The Security Service of Ukraine's Sectoral State Archive only contains a summary report on the "investigation" of this case; the operation's conclusion is unclear. Since 1921–1922, the fate of the vast majority of those involved in the alleged "Kharkiv petlyurivska organization" case has been unclear. They then did not show up in any of the GPU-NKVD's accounting or investigating files, specifically from 1925 to 1938. Simultaneously, two individuals who were involved in the case of the so-called "Kharkiv petlyurivska organization" – Professor of medicine Mykhailo Mishchenko and former Bohdan Khmelnytskyi regiment commander Stepan Lazurenko – arrived in Germany in the 1940s and subsequently immigrated to the United States, where they were influential among the Ukrainian migrants. Mykhailo Mishchenko rose to prominence in the scientific community as a psychiatrist, Stepan Lazurenko became a memoirist, and a significant figure in Ukrainian veteran organizations. However, none of them ever brought up the case of the alleged "Kharkiv petlyurivska organization" while they were in exile, nor did they discuss their fellow soldiers from the 1-st Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Ukrainian Cossack Regiment and other UPR Army units that were also mentioned in the report on this case. Thus, the following questions are still unanswered: what happened to the people in the alleged case? Why is there nothing regarding the "Kharkiv Petlyurivska organization" in the SBU's Branch State Archive or other Ukrainian archives? Who were Stepan Lazurenko and Mykhailo Mishchenko in real life, and what was their function in the United States? The relationship between Soviet intelligence and penal agencies and members of the so-called Second Wave of emigration has not yet been covered in the scientific literature and seems to be awaiting further investigation. One of the earliest attempts to bring up this problem is this article.

Cannibalism in Ukraine during the mass man-made famine of 1921–1923

Objective. Based on scientific works and archival documents, this study aims to comprehensively examine manifestations of cannibalism in Ukraine during the mass man-made famine of 1921–1923; to identify the patterns and specific characteristics of this phenomenon; to outline its geographical spread and scale; and to analyze the reactions of both the authorities and the public to acts of cannibalism.Methodology. The research is grounded in the application of general scientific and specialized historical methods, including the problem-chronological, retrospective, specific-search, systemic-structural, and statistical approaches, among others.Conclusions. Mass cannibalism in Ukraine emerged during the man-made induced famine of 1921–1923. Its occurrence was significantly linked to the influx of starving migrants from the Volga region, who brought this “practice” with them. In the Volga region, cannibalism had already appeared in 1921 and was far more widespread.Prior to 1921, cannibalism was not characteristic of the Ukrainian mentality. This unfamiliarity led representatives of the communist regime and the broader public to respond to it ambiguously and inconsistently – viewing it on one hand as an ordinary criminal offense, and on the other as a symptom of illness or mental disorder. The latter interpretation is supported by the marked scientific interest of physicians in studying this phenomenon.Cannibalism among the local population of Ukraine's famine-stricken provinces spread through both direct (visual) encounters and indirect (rumor-based) experiences. The collected data, which includes at least 106 documented cases or mentions of cannibalism, is not exhaustive. The epicenters of cannibalistic acts were the Zaporizhzhia and Mykolaiv provinces – regions hardest hit by the famine. The peak of cannibalism occurred in the spring of 1922.Most perpetrators acted alone, although about one-third of the cases involved group activity. A marked gender imbalance among offenders was observed. The primary victims were typically the perpetrators’ own children under the age of nine. Adults were targeted approximately three times less frequently. The dominant form of cannibalism involved premeditated murder of the victim; corpse consumption occurred in about one out of every four cases.Public reaction to acts of cannibalism varied. Alongside relatively lenient forms of punishment – such as inflicting minor bodily harm or expulsion from the community – there were more severe responses, including extrajudicial reprisals (beatings to death or execution by shooting), the latter being the more common. Most of the arrested cannibals died either from starvation or mob justice. Those who survived may have contributed to the continuation or spread of cannibalistic practices during the Holodomor.

Anthropological approach to the history of the Great Terror

The article's goal is to show how the anthropological approach, which was earlier instrumental and applied (auxiliary), became the dominant and crucial method in the national historiography of the Great Terror. Methods and methodology. Anthropocentrism serves as the prism through which terror studies are historiographically analyzed. Using aspects of victim anthropology, environmental anthropology, anthropology of everyday life, and postcolonial anthropology, the anthropological approach's dynamics can be traced from the beginning of the study of terror objects (victims) to the conceptual analysis of terror subjects (ideologues, organizers, and perpetrators). Conclusions. The human-centered approach to the Great Terror's historiography was cross-cutting in the post-independence era of Ukraine, and its application varied in intensity and comprehensiveness depending on the object and subject of study, the completeness of the source base, public interest, scientific relevance, and the intellectual capacity of the researcher or researchers. The development of the human-centered approach was lengthy and intricate, taking place in two interconnected fields intended to achieve justice and reveal the historical truth for a) the victims and b) the offenders (organizers, instigators, perpetrators, etc.). The research field's subject-object choices and the study's focus were not chosen at random or by chance; rather, they were determined by the overall development of both domestic and international history and emerged in particular sociopolitical contexts. Researchers have been able to attain a comprehensive understanding of the Great Terror in Soviet Ukraine and close the gap between the cultural and ideological level of society's perception and comprehension of the Soviet past and the eventual factual knowledge of the subject thanks to the critical anthropology of terror.

Soviet defense industry and state security bodies in 1932–1936

The aim is to examine the historical facets of the growth of the Soviet military industry in connection to its interactions with state security services, based on published and archival records and scholarly publications. Methodology and methods. Objectivity, positivism, systematicity, dialectics, and historicism are the pillars of the research approach. Historical approaches – problem-chronological, historical-comparative, and historical-legal – form the foundation of the study. Conclusions. A military-mobilization regime with excessive power concentration, militarization of the major areas of life, and widespread use of coercion in all its manifestations was ultimately established in the USSR throughout the studied period of time. It was discovered that the USSR's political self-isolation and antagonistic relationship with numerous countries across the world served as the catalyst for the Soviet defense industry's rapid expansion. The defense industry emerged as one of the primary generators of secrets, and as it grew, so did the amount of secret record-keeping and the number of secret-encryption units. It was determined that the degree of persecution of former military industry "specialists," whom the Chekists accused of espionage and "mischief," gradually decreased until it peaked in 1934–1935 and then started to pick up steam once more in 1936. Chekists in the military industry paid particular attention to ethnic Germans, both Soviet citizens and "German subjects," who were legitimate former German and Austrian citizens who were suspected of espionage and having a tendency toward German fascism. The Soviet state security agencies' defense industry activities were demonstrated to be concentrated in every conceivable direction, both internal and external: a) counterintelligence: preventing the disclosure of secrets and thwarting espionage; b) political and ideological: terrorizing foreigners, so-called anti-Soviet elements, and other enemies of the people; c) economic; d) physical control: protecting the perimeter of defense enterprises and crossing systems; e) technological; f) anti-sabotage, g) firefighting, etc.

“An Absolutely Honest Bolshevik…”: Survival Strategies during the Investigation of 1938–1939 (Based on the Criminal Case of UNKVD Officer E. Shperling in the Chernihiv Region)

Objective. Drawing on archival criminal records and the personal file of Emmanuil Anatoliyovych Shperling, Deputy Head of the 3rd Department of the UNKVD in the Chernihiv Region, this study investigates the attempts to accuse the defendant of involvement in a counterrevolutionary Trotskyist organization and collaboration with Polish intelligence. It aims to examine the strategies employed by the accused to avoid punishment and to analyze investigative errors that ultimately led to the closure of the criminal case.Methodology and Methods. Using a prosopographical approach, the author exposes the attempt to falsify the criminal proceedings against Shperling, alleging his simultaneous participation in a “Trotskyist-espionage organization” and a Polish intelligence network. The study employs both general scientific and specialized historical methods of inquiry, including comparative-historical, historical-genetic, and linear-chronological methods.Conclusions. The available materials from the criminal case indicate that Emmanuil Shperling, initially arrested on suspicion of belonging to a counterrevolutionary Trotskyist organization, was subsequently accused of espionage on behalf of Poland during the investigation. However, this dual accusation only complicated the collection and processing of evidence, thereby prolonging the investigative process. The shift in jurisdiction – from the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR to the Special Council of the NKVD –within a changing political climate, compelled the investigator to reassess existing evidence and collect new materials regarding Shperling’s alleged crimes.Shperling’s case underscores a critical flaw in the Stalinist terror system during moments of political transition: time. The protracted investigation led to the obsolescence of testimonies, which could no longer be amended due to the deaths of key witnesses. The requalification of charges shifted the focus to Shperling’s alleged “violations of revolutionary legality.” However, his direct involvement in the falsification of criminal cases and the torture of detainees was not adequately investigated, largely due to time constraints.Ultimately, investigators failed due to resistance from the very system that regarded the repression of “enemies of the people” as both necessary and legitimate, while condoning procedural excesses as an acceptable norm.

Commissar Leplevsky’s brother-in-law: the life and career of Davyd Israeliovych Dzhyrin

Methodology and methods. The research approach is founded on the ideas of impartiality, thoroughness, historicism, and systematicity. The goal was accomplished through the application of problem-chronological and comparative-historical methodologies. Research on archival documents was conducted using hermeneutic analysis and source science methods. Conclusions. Along with numerous other activists of a similar nature, D. I. Dzhyrin actively participated in the establishment of the totalitarian dictatorship and carried out its protective duties, including the execution of criminal decrees that resulted in the deaths of numerous defenseless civilians. Rapid professional advancement and dependable cover for all acts were guaranteed by the presence of familial relations with I. M. Leplevsky, the representative of the top of the Soviet leadership. However, when the patron, who was charged with anti-Soviet actions, was exterminated, all his appointees were also immediately destroyed. D.I. Dzhyrin became a victim of the system he had laboriously built after being subjected to a flurry of repressions.
