Under the supervision of the Chekists: the military industry in 1927–1931

Goal. Based on archival and published documents, and scientific works, to investigate the historical aspects of the development of the Soviet military industry, and its relationship with the state security agencies during the late NEP period and at the beginning of the industrialization period. Methodology and methods. The research methodology is based on the principles of objectivity, positivism, systematicity, dialectics, and historicism. The research is based on historical methods: problem-chronological, historical-comparative, and historical-legal. Conclusions. During the studied period, a military-mobilization regime was finally formed in the USSR with over-centralism of power, militarization of the main spheres of life, and extensive use of coercion in all forms. It was found that the political self-isolation of the USSR, hostile relations with many countries of the world, and the lack of allies were the impetus for the increased development of the Soviet military industry. The external military threat was considered real, the suspicion of the Soviet leadership regarding the hostile intentions of its neighbours and other countries of the world was constantly growing. It has been established that the special attention of the Chekists in the field of the military industry was focused on the hostile engineering and technical staff, who had a "bourgeois education", the so-called "spetces". The Chekists considered one of the main means of improving work in this branch of the economy to be the "communization of personnel," the replacement of "spetces" by communists and Komsomol members. The author focuses attention on the harassment, and baiting of "spetces" of the military industry, whom the Chekists accused of wrecking, espionage, terrorism, etc. The issue of protection of secret information in the military industry is also analyzed. It is proven that during the researched period, the military industry was under the close supervision of the OGPU bodies, whose activities in the military industry were concentrated in all possible directions, both inherent to the state security bodies and not, namely: a) counterintelligence: countering espionage and preventing the disclosure of secrets; b) political and ideological; c) economic; d) physical control: perimeter protection, bypass system; e) technological; f) anti-sabotage; g) fire-fighting, etc.

The state of prisoners during the 1932–1933 Holodomor (based on materials from the Dnipropetrovsk region)

The article's goal is to draw attention to the conditions of inmates in the Dnipropetrovsk area during the 1932–1933 Holodomor. The research methodology is grounded in the principles of comprehensiveness, the scientific method, and historicism. The present study applied comparative-historical, historical-genetic, and comparative-historical techniques to accomplish its objective. The methodologies of source and hermeneutic analysis are used in the processing of archival records. Conclusions. A significant rise in the number of prisoners resulted from widespread repressions during the 1932–1933 grain procurement campaign. The majority of these detainees were peasants who were either the subject of an inquiry or had been found guilty of offences including theft of grain, products, animals, and failure to comply with procurement plans. People who had been arrested were housed in appalling conditions since their cells were 500–1000% overcrowded. The extreme overcrowding made it hard to maintain even the barest hygienic and sanitary standards, such as having enough dishes and drinking water. The convicts started to contract infectious diseases, such as typhus, which threatened the region's whole population. A significant death rate resulted from the prisoners' inadequate nutrition once they were fatigued from hunger. In congested quarters, the arrested went on the rampage. The overpopulation of sites of deprivation of liberty rendered it hard to combat crime in the Dnipropetrovsk region's cities and villages since there was nowhere to house the people who had been arrested for armed robbery and banditry. The authorities' response to the dire circumstances surrounding the arrests was to empty the places of confinement. This move was made for more pragmatic reasons than the humane treatment of the prisoners, as they were no longer able to work and the lack of workers in the state and collective farm sectors. Prisoners' conditions worsened throughout 1933 despite the actions taken by the Party-Soviet leadership.

The Activities of the Special Collegium of the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian SSR and Regional Special Collegiums in 1936: Charge Types, Statistics, and Convicts' Social Status

The article's goal is to investigate the principles behind the formation of these collegiums, their activities, how court proceedings are conducted, and the political bent of judicial punishment, based on the report of the regional special collegiums of 1936 and the Special Collegium of the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian SSR. Approaches and methods. To accomplish this purpose, particular search methods, historical reconstruction methods, and problematic and chronological methods were applied. Hermeneutics was the method applied while examining archive documents. The objectivity and historicism criteria were taken into consideration when critiquing the historical source. Conclusions. The author has examined various facets and trends of the 1935–1936 judicial policy of the Bolshevik dictatorship. The operations of regional special judicial bodies were the principal subject of the study. The extrajudicial process of decision-making that was a feature of the USSR's OGPU colleges was to be mainly replaced by the special colleges. The public was to be shown, even through an accelerated trial, how just the decisions rendered against individuals charged with counterrevolutionary actions were. But even formalized trials were unable to guarantee the required speed in the struggle against different avowed and "counter-revolutionary" factions. The overwhelming majority of special panels failed to meet the deadlines for consideration. The members of the special collegiums were also expected to make sure that there was substantial evidence and that all investigational guidelines were being followed. However, in an attempt to expedite the trial, NKVD investigators attempted to fabricate evidence of "counter-revolutionary activity" when they were unable to consistently gather it. As a result, several of the criminal cases were referred for further investigation, which prolonged the period that "counter-revolutionaries" may be punished. The practice of using special colleges in 1934–1936 demonstrated that during mass arrests, they were unable to quickly pass judgment on the alleged "counter-revolutionaries". As a result, during the Great Terror of 1937–1938, the USSR's top political leadership assigned them a supporting role in those cases where there was at least some vague evidence. Extrajudicial bodies known as the " dvojki" and " trojki" made the main decisions.

Special register of former officers and "former whites" by the Cheka-OGPU on the territory of Ukraine, 1919-1931

The article's goal is to examine the process of adding to and deleting from a special register individuals who were originally considered "former whites," such as generals, officers, government officials, participants in the resistance movement against Soviet control, and others. These acts allowed the Cheka-OGPU entities to keep an eye on and manage this group of USSR citizens who posed a threat to the Soviet authorities. If needed, they were also able to implement severe repressive measures. The methodology is founded on the ideas of historicism, scientificity, and in-depth archival source investigation. Problematic, chronological, comparative, search, and genealogical methodologies were used in the research. Conclusions. The Cheka-OGPU were able to compile a vast database of former generals, officers, government officials, and other groups of persons who were collectively referred to as "former whites" between 1919 and 1924. About half of the 50,900 "former whites" who were officially registered on USSR territory as of September 1, 1924, resided in Soviet Ukraine. Almost all of these individuals were taken off the special register between 1925 and 1927. Simultaneously with this operation, a recounting of "former whites" occurred; the OGPU provided additional information and clarification on their personal histories as well as removed deceased people off the lists. When the OGPU initiated punitive and repressive measures in various cases in 1929–1930, they made full use of the data gathered in 1925–1927. Specifically, during the fabrication of the "Spring" military officer case, which is considered to be counter-revolutionary. The "Book of records of people who were on the personal record of former white officers in the bodies of the OGPU of Ukraine" was published in the spring of 1931 as a consequence of the operation regarding this matter by the bodies of the GPU of the Ukrainian SSR. This edition had information on 21,062 people and was released in 4 volumes with a 900 copy circulation. This edition was based on lists and questionnaires of individuals removed from the special register between 1925 and 1927, as well as information on "former whites" registered in the Cheka bodies between 1919 and 1920 about whom there was no information. As other police and government officials were found during the Vesna case who were not on the 1925–1927 lists, the goal of this publication was to offer a full database of "former whites". Following this, repression affected at least 1,800 of the individuals included in the "Book of Registration of People...". The documents about the registration and subsequent expulsion from the special district of "former whites" were kept at the Sectoral State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine. These include questionnaires filled out by a significant portion of "former whites," lists of individuals who were withdrawn from special registration in the majority of USSR districts, and many sets of "Books of registration of people". Research in the areas of military history, demography, genealogy, and the operation of the Cheka-OGPU's punitive and repressive system during the understudied 1920s is made possible by the information found in the materials and documents that have been preserved. The registration questionnaires of "former whites" should receive special attention because they include a wealth of unique biographical data that could be useful to genealogical experts as well as researchers examining people's roles in particular historical events.

Punishment for faith: persecution of the priest of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Dmytro Karpenko

The purpose of the study is to reconstruct the biography of Dmytro Karpenko, a priest in the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, using documents and criminal cases kept at the Sectoral State Archives of the Security Service of Ukraine and the State Archives of Chernihiv Oblast. The article focuses on the priest's arrest, conviction, and indications that his criminal convictions were fabricated in the 1920s and 1930s. The author examined the accusations levied against the clergyman and determined the reasons for his criminal trial. It was possible to look into the accused's civic standing and political beliefs based on his evidence. The precise date of D. Karpenko's passing was determined by examining the research materials and extrajudicial decisions. Methodology and methods. The author employed both unique historical methods – historical, comparison, and modelling to reconstruct events – and general scientific methods (systematic analysis, synthesis, induction, and deduction) to accomplish the research purpose. The methods of source analysis were applied to the processing of the archival materials, including the establishment of the location and time of the document's origin as well as the verification and classification of sources. The anthropological approach was the main approach for this study. The biographical method was used to reconstruct the biography of priest D. Karpenko, and his civic standing was ascertained through critical analysis. Conclusions. The biographical data regarding D. Karpenko's life and career was thoroughly examined using archive materials, some of which were previously unpublished in scientific journals. He was arrested six times and imprisoned five times between 1926 and 1937. Criminal proceedings against D. Karpenko were initiated primarily because of his involvement in the Ukrainian church organization, his active civic position on the development of an independent Ukraine, and his agitation of the rural populace regarding the widespread use of the Ukrainian language, including during church services. The conclusion regarding the criminal case's falsification can be made based on the differences in the witness and priest testimonies, the witnesses' repeated use of the same words and sentences, and the absence of evidence supporting counterrevolutionary activities. No anti-Soviet books or letters that might have discredited Karpenko in front of the Soviet authorities were discovered during the searches. The priest was shot dead in 1938 in Chernihiv by the decision of the NKVD troika.

The execution of Ukrainian journalist Feodosii Taran-Honcharenko as “a former borot’bist”

Goal. Using the materials from the archival-criminal case of Ukrainian journalist Pheodosij Taran-Goncharenko, this study aims to reconstruct the prosopographic portrait of the suppressed figure by delving into the key stages of his creative biography and analyzing the pertinent details found in the case documents. Methodology and methods. The author employed prosopographic and anthropological methods. Biographical, problem-chronological, particular search, and hermeneutic approaches were employed to accomplish the aim. Conclusions. One of the lesser-known personalities in Bykivnyansky Martyrology is Pheodosij Taran-Goncharenko. His journalistic background as well as his criminal case from the archives have not had the focus of a scientific investigation yet. The author clarified facts of Taran-Goncharenko's biografy and established his membership in the Youth Union, the USDRP, and the Ukrainian borot’bists based on the found documents, the majority of which are published in scholarly journals for the first time. Furthermore, factual evidence pertaining to his tenure at the publication "Visti VUCVK" was located and examined. During the period when F. Taran-Honcharenko oversaw VUCVK News, the Ukrainian press underwent a total transformation towards communist ideology. The author postulates that there is a strong connection between the history of the Soviet authorities' extermination of the Ukrainian Borotbists and the archival-criminal case of Taran-Goncharenko. The arrested person's circle of friends and his correspondence with P. Lyubchenko, O. Shumsky, and A. Hvylia confirmed this. The criminal case of F. Taran-Honcharenko was included in a series of cases concerning the communist regime's liquidation of the remaining members of the Ukrainian Party of Borotbists. On December 24, 1937, Ph. Taran-Honcharenko was shot “as a member of a Ukrainian terrorist organization”. Most likely, he is interred in the Bykivnyan woodland.
