Operation North (Troika): in the language of documents and through the eyes of eyewitnesses

The research aims to investigate planning and implementing the deportation of Jehovah’s Witnesses from Ukraine based on the archive materials from “Troyka File” and on testimonies collected in 2020 and 2021. Methodology and methods. The research has been guided by the principles of historicism and objectivity, general scholarly methods (system analysis, synthesis, induction and deduction) as well as specific methods of historical studies. While working with archive files, methods of source-study analysis were applied (sources verification and classification, establishing the location and time of creating the document). The methods of clustering and systematization as well as the method of statistical analysis were used to determine the course of deportation and to revise the number of deportees, and oral history methods (biography interview, narrative strategy, content analysis) were used to research the personal experiences of the deportees. Conclusions. First plans on deporting Jehovah’s Witnesses from the Western parts of the USSR were established in May 1950. The main criterion of being included into the deportee lists was affiliation with the religion itself, not any particular actions of the believers. Although the operation was centralized, it had its specific features in each of the republics. In Ukraine, the deportation took place one week later than in other republics. Compared with them, it was milder, yet the government overfulfilled its plans, and more people were deported than had initially been planned, even though the deportation had been cancelled in Transcarpathia. No reports of resistance or flee attempts by the deportees are known. The interviewed eyewitnesses confirm the tough process of adapting to the new conditions, such as unusually severe climate, hard labour in forestry farms and collective farms, as well as constant persecution of both adults and children for their taking part in religious meetings and observing their rituals as well as for their refusal to take part in politics, in the pioneer movement and in the Komsomol. The range of punishments varied a lot and depended largely on the administration of each collective farm or commandant’s office. Jehovah’s Witnesses were released from the special settlement regime in 1965, but the Soviet government further persecuted them and restricted their freedom of movement up until the late 1980s.

An Opera of Bird Voices: Petro Borysovskyi and Forensic Psychiatric Examination in the Postwar Persecutions

The punitive authorities in the USSR had the right to drive a person to madness, but it was not permitted to trial a clinically insane person judicially or extrajudicially. This paradoxical situation is evident in the investigation of Petro Borisovskyi, who was suspected of collaborating with the Germans and participating in the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. During interrogations, Borisovskyi behaved nonsensically—perhaps he was feigning mental illness to avoid criminal liability, or perhaps he really did begin to suffer from it as a reaction to stress. The suspect was examined by doctors four times, twice in clinics. The results of the examinations were ambiguous – after hospitalization, Borisovskyi would begin to behave normally again over time, but the final conclusion did not rule out the possibility that he had really suffered a transient “hysterical reaction” (which might return). Despite this, the doctors declared him sane, and the state security authorities sent him to a prison camp. The entire investigation process took two years and included a decision by the highest authority – the Special Council of the USSR Ministry of State Security. The meticulous efforts to establish his mental sanity are particularly noteworthy given the general lawlessness of the Soviet punitive system. While there may be doubts about Borisovskyi’s insanity, there is no doubt about the “madness” of the punitive organs. What strikes one most when reviewing the investigative materials is the distortion of the “Chekist” lingo. Orders and threats are presented in the interrogation protocols as questions. Sentences are constructed passively in order to erase the personality of state security officers. The Soviet punitive system can only be understood as a collective psychosis.

How the Economic Department of the GPU of Ukrainian SSR took the money of the Dobroflot

The goal is to investigate attempts by employees of the State Political Directorate (GPU) of the Ukrainian SSR to seize pre-revolutionary savings of Soviet citizens from foreign currency accounts. The methodological basis of the study is the principles of objectivity, systematicity, historicism, and interdisciplinarity. To achieve this goal, the following methods were used: problem-chronological, institutional, historical anthropology (understanding the motives, aspirations, views, and sociocultural stereotypes of people's behavior). Conclusions. In the early 1930s, in the search for currency to implement state economic projects, in particular forced industrialization, the attention of the Joint State Political Directorate (OGPU) of the USSR was drawn to the deposits of Soviet citizens abroad and insurance policies in foreign companies. They operated through institutions specially created for this purpose, in particular, the Credit Bureau, which was reestablished at the end of 1931. In 1933, it was established through intelligence sources that before the revolution, the Odesa branch of the Dobroflot society had a savings and assistance fund for Dobroflot employees and staff, which had been taken to the United States. It was only possible to return the money to the USSR by finding the fund's depositors and offering them services to return the money, with a portion deducted for the state. However, on November 16, 1933, an agreement was signed between the USSR and the USA, which went down in history as the “Litvinov Assignment” (in American doctrine), under which, among other things, the Soviet government agreed to transfer to the US government the ownership rights to the accounts of nationalized enterprises held in American banks. Thus, Soviet citizens – former employees of Dobroflot – were deprived of the right to receive their own funds, and as a result, the USSR government did not receive Dobroflot's funds.

The State Border and Borderlands of Ukraine, 1918–1933

Goal. This study examines the historical aspects of the establishment of the border service of the Ukrainian SSR and the conditions in the border zone, based on archival sources, published documents, and scholarly research. Particular attention is paid to the population replacement in the borderlands through the deportation of large groups considered by the Soviet authorities as “socially hostile elements,” and their substitution with “reliable, vetted cadres.” Methodology and Methods. The research is grounded in the principles of objectivity, positivism, systematic analysis, and historicism. Historical methods employed include the problem-chronological method, the historical-comparative method, and the historical-legal method. Conclusions. The study demonstrates that during the period under investigation, the USSR operated under a military-mobilization regime characterized by centralized power, militarization of key spheres of life, and pervasive use of coercion. The main drivers of intensified border protecttion were aggressive communist ideology, lack of allies, the theory and practice of class struggle, and Soviet espionage paranoia. External military threats were perceived as real, while the Soviet leadership’s suspicion of the intentions of other countries steadily increased. Border control served as the first external layer of the Soviet system of protection against the “hostile” world. All restrictive measures—territorial and informational—intersected and were interdependent, creating a synergistic effect that sustained the Soviet “Iron Curtain.” The research establishes that population groups deemed “unreliable” or “harmful” by the Soviet authorities were deliberately deported from the border territories. They were replaced by “politically reliable” kolkhoz farmers, rural activists, workers, and party functionaries mobilized from the eastern “industrial” regions of Ukraine. A distinct group consisted of so-called “pre-settlers”—demobilized Red Army soldiers originating from the central regions of the RSFSR. The study confirms that the majority of Soviet policies in the borderlands were aimed at systematic population replacement.

The Ukrainian Underground, 1946–1949: Victimhood as a Form of Existing

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the victim narrative developed and operated inside the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) between 1946 and 1949.Methodology. The history of everyday life approach, which forms the basis of research methodology, enables an analysis of everyday life in the underground as a place where new forms of collective behavior, survival techniques, and ethical standards are formed.Scientific novelty. The interpretation of the victim story via the prism of commonplace behaviors that maintained the underground movement's vitality after it lost its organizational integrity—discipline, solidarity, religiosity, and moral self-control—represents scientific originality.Conclusions. Victimhood emerged as another way of life throughout the war in the later stages of the liberation movement. The struggle turned to the domain of everyday survival, internal discipline, and moral tenacity against the loss of open combat area, widespread repression, a manpower scarcity, and the breakdown of social support. The Ukrainian underground's experience from 1946 to 1949 showed that victimization might have a stabilizing rather than a destructive effect on a society fighting an enemy. It turns suffering and loss into a tool for creating meaning that maintains the community's agency in the face of ongoing uncertainty and pressure. Victimhood has cultivated a long-term ability for endurance via the everyday practices of discipline, solidarity, piety, and self-control. This capacity becomes the main form of resistance when conventional forms of conflict prove insufficient.

Liudvik Rozenberg: From a Volunteer of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen to a Member of the Communist Party

Purpose of the Article. On the basis of a wide range of archival documents—most notably an archival-criminal case of the NKVD of Soviet Ukraine—as well as memoir literature, the article seeks to reconstruct the biography of Liudvik Rozenberg: a volunteer of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen Legion, a participant in the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921, a member of the Communist Party of Eastern Galicia (from 1923, the Communist Party of Western Ukraine), and a prisoner of Polish prisons and the Bereza Kartuska detention camp. In October 1939, he was arrested by the NKVD in Lviv; in the summer of 1941, he was executed by firing squad in Kyiv. Methodology. The research methodology is grounded in the principles of scholarly rigor, historicism, objectivity, and comprehensiveness. The method of critical analysis played a leading role in the examination of sources. Conclusions. The study succeeds in establishing the principal events in Rozenberg’s biography, as well as the driving forces and actors that influenced the processes of his acculturation. It is noted that decisive roles in his political life were played by his membership in the “Drahomanivka,” his participation in the combat fraternity of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (USR) during the First World War, and his involvement in the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1922. It is demonstrated that his relations with the “left” and with Soviet state institutions and practices of violence underwent significant transformation during the interwar period. During his short life, L. Rozenberg took part in major events of European and Ukrainian history and personally knew many prominent politicians, military leaders, and intellectuals. He devoted all his energy and knowledge to the struggle for a socialist future for Ukraine – a future that ultimately proved to be a utopia both in Eastern Galicia and in Soviet Ukraine. Stalin’s authoritarian regime in the late 1920s was accompanied by the curtailment of the policy of indigenization (korenizatsiya, Ukrainization) and by the intensification of repression against real and potential opponents of the Soviet system, both within the Soviet Union and beyond its borders. The founders of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine, including L. Rozenberg, also fell under suspicion. Under the influence of Soviet and Polish repression, as well as events in Subcarpathian Ukraine, L. Rozenberg had already come to realize by 1938 that “democracy is a great force.” However, he recognized the advantages of Western democracies too late, while simultaneously underestimating the danger of the approaching Second World War. Otherwise, he might have had a chance to leave Europe in time—a continent that was becoming increasingly dangerous for Jews.

Kyndrat Shvets (1913–1975), Head of the Volyn Regional Directorate of the OUN(M): A Biography through the Struggle for Ukraine’s Independence

The study aims to illuminate the biography of Kyndrat Shvets through the lens of his struggle for the state independence of Ukraine. Methodology. The research methodology is based on the principles of objectivity, scholarly rigor, and historicism. In addition to general scientific methods of deduction and induction, the study employs specialized historical approaches: prosopographical analysis, historical-chronological method, and historical analysis. Conclusions. The formation of K. Shvets as a pro-Ukrainian figure was significantly influenced by his education at the Lutsk Ukrainian Gymnasium, which served as a hub for promoting the idea of Ukrainian statehood and whose alumni included many supporters of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). As a member of the OUN from 1933, Shvets gained authority in underground activities and became a member of the Lutsk Regional Directorate. In 1935, together with other OUN members, he was arrested by the Polish police and sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. His incarceration adversely affected his health, with long-term consequences for his later life. Following the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Shvets was released and returned to his native village. The Soviet occupation, however, forced him to flee to Nazi-occupied territory. Working as a teacher, he was able to significantly expand the OUN(M) underground network among Ukrainian villages in the Hrubieszów County. After the split within the OUN, he remained loyal to Andriy Melnyk, returned to Volyn in April 1942, and joined the Volyn Regional Directorate of the OUN(M) as propaganda officer. In this capacity, Shvets organized educational initiatives, self-study groups, and initiated the establishment of memorials to fallen OUN members. In March 1943, he assumed leadership of the Volyn Regional Directorate of the OUN(M). Efforts to resolve the conflict between the OUN(B) and OUN(M) at the regional level only exacerbated tensions. Following the Soviet occupation of Volyn, Shvets emigrated and withdrew from underground activities. Nevertheless, the OUN(M) leadership compelled him and his wife to return to the USSR to lead the underground movement in Western Ukraine. Family responsibilities, including the birth of a child, required Shvets to exercise caution in his clandestine work. The couple’s arrest in 1949 led to years of hardship in labor camps and exile. Due to his deteriorating health, the Shvets family was released from exile but was not permitted to return to the Ukrainian SSR. K. Shvets died in Kazakhstan, while his wife returned to Lviv in the early 1990s. She actively participated in public and political life and openly criticized the foreign leadership of the OUN(M) for compelling her ailing husband to resume underground activity.
